This article explains how to use Microsoft Surface Dock 1 Firmware Update to install and manage firmware on the original Surface Dock 1. When installed on your Surface device, it will update Surface Dock 1 devices attached to your Surface device.
Microsoft periodically releases new versions of Surface Dock 1 Firmware Update. The MSI file is not self-updating. If you have deployed the MSI to Surface devices and a new version of the firmware is released, you will need to deploy the new version.

If the update is not successful, then event ID 2007 will be displayed as an Error event rather than Information. Additionally, the version reported in the Windows Registry will not be current.
When the update is complete, updated DWORD values will be displayed in the Windows Registry, corresponding to the current version of the tool. See the Versions reference section in this article for details. For example:
In response to requests from customers for more detailed lifecycle information to help plan and manage hardware and software deployments, Surface is offering more guidance on our driver and firmware updates.
This lifecycle policy covers drivers and firmware releases for Windows-based Surface devices. The lifecycle begins when a device is first released and concludes when Surface ceases publication of drivers and firmware updates on the End of Servicing date. The following sections define the lifecycle policy and End of Servicing dates.
Device support period. The device support period defines the period during which Surface will support driver and firmware updates for a device. The Device Support Period starts when a device is released. Surface devices will receive driver and firmware updates for at least 4 years from when the device was first released. In cases where the support duration is longer than 4 years, an updated end of servicing date will be published in advance of the date of last servicing.
OS version support. OS version support defines the operating system versions supported by Surface during the device support period. Surface devices will receive driver and firmware updates for Windows OS versions released in the prior 30 months. Surface won't support Windows OS versions earlier than the OS versions supported at device release. For the minimum supported OS version of your Surface device, see Surface supported operating systems.
Once the device support period is concluded at the End of Servicing Date, devices will continue to receive Windows OS feature and security updates in accordance with the Windows Lifecycle Policy as described on the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy support page.
Microsoft's Surface Book 3 has a new firmware update available. As is normally the case with firmware updates, the Surface Book 3's update doesn't include any new features. It instead focuses on device stability and security improvements, including improvements to the device's display adapters and graphics.
Microsoft highlights that Surface updates are released in stages. As a result, you might not see the update right away. It will eventually roll out to all Surface Book 3 devices. You may also see a "View optional updates" link within the Windows Updates settings. If you do see such a prompt, Microsoft recommends selecting the option to ensure that all Surface drivers in the release have been installed.
Microsoft has released fresh firmware updates for several of its Surface products, including Surface Book 3, Surface Laptop 1st Gen, Laptop Go, Surface Pro 5, and Pro 6. These updates focus on device stability along with addressing critical security vulnerabilities. Earlier in the week, the company also released updates for Surface Laptop 3 (Intel), Laptop 4, and Surface Book.
Surface Laptop (1st Gen), Surface Pro 5, and Pro 6 devices running Windows 10 May 2019 Update, version 1903 (19H1), or greater get the following August 2021 firmware updates focusing on device stability, audio and camera stability, along with critical security fixes:
Last Friday Microsoft released firmware updates and at least one driver update (Intel HD Graphics) for the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3. The weekend proved interesting for many Surface 3 owners, who reported a host of problems, and the widely anticipated firmware patch for the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book still hasn't materialized.
Microsoft claims the System Firmware Update -- 1/19/2016 provides a slew of fixes and improvements. The Surface Pro 3 update history lists improvements to startup reliability, pen support in UEFI, the fingerprint sensor driver, Wireless and Bluetooth drivers, graphics and audio drivers, and an updated battery driver. The analogous Surface 3 update history also includes Type Cover improvements and a wide array of pen fixes.
However, complaints started pouring in shortly after the firmware update hit the ether. The longest diatribes come from Microsoft's own Answers Forum, under the heading Issues after updated Surface Pro 3 firmware 19/01/2016. Here's a short list of the reported problems, lightly edited to remove the largely NSFW anti-Microsoft vituperations.
Immediately after installing the firmware/intel display drivers, my Start button (software/on-screen) stopped responding. In fact, the entire task bar was unresponsive. I did open up the Surface App to look for the surface pen settings, which were not there before. They didn't show up but upon closing the app, the system froze.
Random reboots on my surface when not in use: 3 reboots last night when surface in sleep mode; reboot this morning upon inserting power cord when it was in sleep mode; reboot just a few mins ago while in sleep mode. Cannot reboot from start menu, stuck on black screen. Touch screen issues.
In my experiments early Monday morning with a Surface Pro 3 running Insider build 11102, however, I was quite surprised to discover that the rolled back driver -- 4.0.112.1 -- was not replaced on restart. Checking with a clean upgrade to 11102, I was also surprised to see that the firmware update is not being offered.
It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for Microsoft to reissue this botched firmware patch (Surface Pro 3 firmware has already been updated 20 times). It also makes me wonder how long it will take for the anticipated, and sorely needed, Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book patches to appear.

As always, Surface 3 will receive and install the new firmware automatically, but you can force the update by going to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update and tapping the Check for updates button.
For home users, the update will be applied with the standard Windows Update process and delivered in stages. For businesses, firmware update management by WSUS or SCCM is not yet available. (Feature is included in the latest SCCM Technical Preview 1706 but not yet in the latest 1702 production version)
Microsoft Surface firmware contains multiple drivers, software, and UEFI updates. Most releases do not upgrade all drivers, firmware and UEFI at once. Some releases only update one or two component, while others will update pretty much everything. Having an inventory of each of those components would be huge to maintain and managed throughout releases.
Microsoft pushed out a firmware update to Surface Pro 3 devices on Monday that's supposed to fix a problem that keeps the battery from charging all the way. An error in a limited number of devices causes the system to get the wrong charge capacity for the Surface Pro 3's battery, the company said. As a result, the battery isn't charged all the way, even though the system thinks it reached capacity.
The fix will show up in Windows Update as "Surface Firmware Update 8/29." When users install the update, they should make sure that their Surface Pro 3's battery is above 40 percent of capacity and that it's plugged into the AC adapter. 2ff7e9595c
